Noam Rappaport once said that he is interested in “what happens when two things are related to each other. The relationship becomes the third thing.”
In practice: two canvases join to make a single piece, found objects fix to a painted surface; or even, categories of painting and sculpture themselves, muddle.
Rappaport’s language – its shaped canvases, luminosity, colourism, geometry, its humour, draws from a personal canon of modernist painting. But despite its affinities with the past, his work is stridently contemporary and idiosyncratic, pushing composition and formal balance to the edge of a precipice.
