Noam Rappaport once said that he is interested in “what happens when two things are related to each other. The relationship becomes the third thing.”
In practice: two canvases join to make a single piece, found objects fix to a painted surface; or even, categories of painting and sculpture themselves, muddle.
Rappaport’s language – its shaped canvases, luminosity, colorism, geometry, its humour, draws from an idiosyncratic canon of modernist painting. But despite its affinities with the past, his work is stridently contemporary and idiosyncratic, pushing composition and formal balance to the edge of a precipice.
In recent work he continues to make work that pushes composition and formal balance to the edge of a precipice, finding surprising new spaces within traditional forms.
