Liam Everett’s embodied and martially driven relationship to abstraction results in paintings that oscillate between their indexical and autonomous tendencies. In this abstract, mixed-media paintings and sculptures, Everett explores the process of art making through the movement of his body as he shapes raw materials into finished pieces. Inspired by dance and theater, his work abounds with human traces, gestural smears and smudges, lines, and creases. By erasing layers of pigment with caustic everyday substances like salt, lemon juice, and alcohol, he foregrounds paintings’ earthiness wile highlighting its kinship with the practice of alchemy.

On Meeting Again
On Meeting Again is the accompanying catalogue to Liam Everett’s exhibition of the same name, which was on view at Kasmin through November 13, 2021. Fully-illustrated, the book features a foreword by Nicholas Olney and a newly commissioned conversation between the artist and Maria Petschnig. Original studio photography by Emilía Turner reveals Everett’s habitat in Sebastopol, California, where his process of steadfast and repetitious application and erasure employs the use of non-traditional methods to apply—and caustic substances to remove—painstakingly developed layers of paint and composition. Produced in a limited run, On meeting again illuminates Everett’s experiments in the development of a self-sustaining studio practice.
