About the artist
b. 1937 in New York City, NY, USA
d. 2025 in USA
Grosvenor’s art resists simple definition. His sculptures at once graceful, dynamic, and seemingly minimalist could also appear quirky, absurd, and at times even verge on the maximalist. Whether realized in monumental structures or intimate color snapshots, his work revealed a sculptural and conceptual clarity that unfolded with striking effortlessness. His practice consistently engaged with architecture, the viewer’s physical presence, and cultural references never fixed to a single interpretation, yet never without meaning. This openness, this refusal to narrow itself, is what continues to draw us back to his work, listening for what it has to reveal.
In 2020, Suzan Frecon reflected on her first encounter with Grosvenor’s art: It transports me where I have never been before. I am struck by its visual manifestation of being an art itself, without the need for an explanation. When I see it, I think to myself, “This is art!”
